lkra Edelkeramik was founded within Ransbach-Baumbach, Germany in 1892 by Jacob Leopold Knödgen, initially producing traditional items such as beer tankards and serving ware.
Richard Knödgen later took over the business, until 1965. Following the decline of manufacturing during WW2, the production of decorative ceramics was resumed with a fresh approach and a greater range of products. The company grew during the mid 1950s when ornamental vases with exciting new shapes and glazes were created. The company's designers during this innovative period included Edmund Peters, Ernst Werner and Richard Knödgen's son-in-law, Josef Koch. Richard Knödgen died in 1969 and his son Leo took over the business before it closed its doors in 1995.
