The firm was known as Whitefriars Glass: James Powell & Sons of London (the Powell name was dropped much later) and closed in the 1980s. Initially creating and supplying beautiful stained glass for churches, the firm went onto become known for its associations with designers including William Morris, producing Art Nouveau and Art and Crafts art glass and tableware.
During the mid twentieth century, Whitefriars became a leading light in contemporary glass designs and is much coveted by today's collectors for its Modernist creations, most notably by Geoffrey Baxter and William Wilson.
